How to make hot chocolate gift jars

With layers of freshly grated chocolate, crushed candy canes and fluffy marshmallows, these delectable hot chocolate jars are a perfect edible treat for any chocoholic. Get ahead by making these up to two weeks in advance – they keep for up to three months. Don’t forget to screenshot the ingredients list at the bottom of the guide for the next time you go in store.

  1. Prepare the jars

    Fill an empty spice jar with recently boiled water. Swill, empty and dry well.

  2. Layer the jars

    Grate 4 squares of plain chocolate and spoon into the jar. Layer with 2 tbsp demerara sugar, then 3 tbsp good quality cocoa powder.

  3. Crush the candy cane

    Place three 12g candy canes in a sandwich bag and crush with a rolling pin to a coarse powder. Spoon 2 tbsp of the crushed candy on top of the cocoa.

  4. Fill with marshmallows and decorate

    Top with the mini marshmallows and close the lid. Prepare the decorative ribbons and tag stating the instructions for making, which are:

    "Pour into a heavy-based pan with 600ml milk and bring to the boil, stirring continually. Pour into two mugs and enjoy the best hot chocolate ever!"

  5. Decorate your jars

    Decorate your jars with the prepared ribbon and tag, and share with friends and family!
